Often times we are
told that love in blinding. With that being said people tend to deny the truth
when they’re told their loved one has committed a crime. Not wanting to see the
truth is a part of an illusion. In “A Streetcar Named Desire” we get to see that
Stella is doing exactly that when she says, “I couldn’t go on believing her
story and live with Stanley”. Stella was told that her very own husband raped
her sister and Stella does not want to believe it because she does not want to
see the fault in Stanley. She would rather keep that illusion/fantasy in her head
that Stanley is perfect even though he is abusive and a drunk. Many times, in life we would rather deny the
truth just to be happy so we can go on and continue to live in our fantasy.
Situations like
these are often seen in people’s everyday lives. For example the Syrian Civil
War. Many counties leaders seem to blind themselves with the issues that are
taking place in Syria mainly because it does not affect them in any way. Some
people say it is best to mind your business but is that really the answer and
reason for not helping innocent civilians. It’s more of the mindset Stella has
which is, if everything is going good for me, why open my eyes to the bad when
I can just continue to act as if everything is okay. We are so used to living
in a fantasy where we think our life should be perfect that we tend to forget
about people who have way worse. On March 8th it was reported that
the Government has just took over the Eastern part with an airstrike. As stated
by Bethan McKernan “The misery in a besieged rebel suburb of Damascus caused by
the Syrian government’s relentless push to crush the
area is indicative of a “new phase of horror” Other countries only get involved when it
seems beneficial or a good idea.
Individuals tend to
also hide from the truth and like to live in a way where fantasy over weighs reality.
This type of issue is often times displayed as an psychological issue. People
tend to suffer from some sort of mental issue. In a show named “Bates Motel” a
character who goes by the name of Norman Bates is suffering from constant
blackout which his mother knows about. She decides to ignore the fact that her
son is mentally because shed rather go in living and acting like everything is
fine because this way her life can stay as it is. She believes her like is
perfectly fine and does not want to face the facts. Once again this relates to Stella
where she does not want to believe the accusations made against her husband.
The idea of wanting
to live in a fantasy and creating an illusion is shown brilliantly by Stella.
Stanley and Stella’s marriage is clearly based more on sexual attraction rather
than anything else. Stella does love her husband and refuses to see the fault
in him. She is allowing herself to create an illusion where her life is
perfectly fine and live in a fantasy even though Stanley may not even be the
guy for her. We see this almost everyday in our daily lives, we see this in TV,
in our friends lives and sometimes even in our own lives.
